When you're looking through marketplace services, you're bound to come across a load of different payment methods. This might leave you wondering which ones you should trust.
Here at BHW, we don't limit sellers based on what payments methods they accept, but some have more security for the buyer than others.
In this thread, we'll be going over some of the most commonly accepted payment methods so that you can make a more informed decision.
PayPal (Business)
This is one of the more common payments methods you'll see on the forum. In terms of refunds, they tend to favour the buyer (especially when digital goods are concerned) and they have their own disputes centre. You'll also get the full payment back, including the transaction fee.
PayPal (Friends & Family)
You'll come across this in some sales threads where sellers want a PayPal "friends and family" payment. You see, PayPal has an option for friends and family to money to account holders. In some cases, the fee is waived for the seller through this method, but you should be advised that PayPal's Buyer Protection does not cover payments made in this manner.
Stripe
The fees for Stripe are comparable to PayPal, albeit slightly cheaper.
Unlike PayPal, you won't get your transaction fee back if you need to pay through Striple.
Wise
Formerly known as Transferwise, Wise has been showing up more on the forum in the last several years.
Wise typically has lower transaction fees than most other payment processors and they are not currently subject to income reporting.
You can request refund with Wise, and the money gets sent back to the bank or card you paid with.
Zelle/Venmo/Cash App
These three are free peer-to-peer mobile apps that allow its users to transfer funds between recipients. There are fees when funds are cashed out and there are a few differences between them. For example, Zelle requires its users to link to a bank account whilst Venmo and Cash App allow its users to maintain a balance on the app itself.
Additionally, it's extremely difficult to get your money back if something goes wrong.
Cryptocurrencies
You all know what Bitcoin is, and some sellers accept BTC and other cryptocurrencies in their sales threads. Some people prefer these payments methods as they don't like using fiat money, there are (sometimes) no fees involved, or they like not having their money tracked.
One issue with paying with cryptocurrency is that you cannot simply chargeback if the service doesn't work out; you'll be at the mercy of the seller.
Payoneer
This is one is preferred by sellers who like its lower transaction fees and live outside of the US.
You can file chargebacks through Payoneer in the event of a non-delivery.
