Can't figure out how to remove empty 3rd column.

My wordpress site is setup with a "Recent Posts" on the left, then two side columns next to it.

I have NO widgets or anything placed in the 3rd column, yet its just a big white blank column.

I just want a setup with Recent posts l Advertising column.

I have played around everywhere for a day trying to figure out how to delete it or uncheck it. Ive been googling it for hours. Is this a php fix?

I have been doing webdesign and wordpress for a while. There could be a few things.
1. you have a theme that defaults to filler data if you don't add the widgets
2. the column could be in the theme and you need to remove the div cell if you want it gone completely.
3. if its not a div it my just be a stylecheet adjustment to fill the space.

Post a link and let me look at it if you want. Get firebug if you don't have it on firefox it will save you alot of time when editing stylesheets
