I don't know if this is a new situation, but I've found that to suscribe is necessary to pay $1000 for signing up the site as a website/company to obtain also a shortened name based url.

Any experiences on this?

Despite seeming like a crazy figure, many companies (such as hotels) are desperate to engage with the powerhouse Chinese market. They believe that a 1k payment is a valuable investment that would somehow give them an instant booth and "look more official" to potential Chinese customers.

Seems crazy I know.
