Why is everyone afraid of cold calling?

So many people are afraid of cold calling, let alone calling a store as a consumer. So many girls are even afraid of calling to order pizza or get the store hours, for example.

Are you afraid of cold calling or were you? What'd you do to get over it?

I dont get it why would anyone be afraid to talk over the phone or send message on some network, email...

I understand if you are scared in person, physical reactions and shit, but you can hang up whenever you want, people cant make fun of you, you cant lose anything.
